We Are Better Together – An Open Letter by Tom Gill

Tom Gill - Letter - MikeStarchuk.com

As we near the end of this municipal campaign, I want to give my gratitude to the citizens of Surrey for this humbling experience. Serving as your City Councillor and now taking part in the race to be your Mayor has been a true honour. It has shown me that Surrey residents are resilient, vibrant and strong. Politics can often be divisive, but it also has the ability to unite us if we harness the power of all the things that connect us – and not the things that divide us. This race has solidified my fundamental belief – we are better together. In 2018, we set out to bring fundamental change to how politics are done in the City of Surrey. Our ideas and our team are the result of this new direction. We have shared a vision with you and asked you to imagine a Surrey that is strong and inviting, rich with opportunity, vibrant with culture and safe for everyone. I came to Surrey as a young man. Today, as a husband and a father of three, I want to create a future that is bright for not only my kids, but all of our kids and grandkids. I want our young people to be given the opportunities and experiences that many of us could only dream of. The decisions we make today will have a significant impact on the success of generations to come. For me, the true measure of my time serving as your City Councillor, and as your Mayor if you put your trust in me, will be the prosperity of our sons and daughters. When I came to Surrey over 30 years ago, there were a lot of jokes about Surrey. We are not that city anymore. The Surrey of today differs from the Surrey of yesterday, and we now need to focus on building the Surrey of tomorrow. Fiscally responsible and socially progressive approaches will create a city poised for a brighter tomorrow. Through our investments in public safety, infrastructure, affordable housing, arts and culture, and sports and entertainment, we will build a 21st century city that will be the envy of the world. I am proud of the campaign that we have run. I have stayed true to the son my parents raised, their values of hard work, integrity, and compassion fuel my passion for public service. Above all, I have made sure that our campaign be a campaign of ideas, honesty, and respect. A campaign that my wife and children can be proud of. To my entire team – thank you. Each of you as volunteers, have humbled me with your support and I am proud to be fighting the good fight with you all. Voting is a privilege and if I am afforded the opportunity to serve you as your next Mayor, I commit to building a Surrey that we can all be proud of. Surrey, we are better together. – Tom
